Any communication done over the web is done in plain text and is open to being intercepted and misused. With Gmail becoming more and more popular everday, I would suggest that all those who use Gmail follow the advise below to mitigate their risk of being "Hacked"
USE HTTPS://
I know its easier to just type gmail.com , however please get into the habit of using https://www.gmail.com, save it as a favouraite / bookmark. This is the option that is used for Internet banking, online financial transactions , or anything that requires a secure option.
SET DEFAULT TO HTTPS://
Go to the settings options in your gmail account and under General Tab, go to the bottom of the page and choose "Always use https"
DO NOT SHARE PASSWORD
Please do not share your passwords for anything with anyone. Period.
PURGE YOUR CONTACTS
Regulary review your saved contacts in gmail and purge any contacts you have not communicated with or may not communicate with in the future, it will not reduce your risk, but in the event of your account being compromised, there would be fewer innocent casualties.
NEVER STORE PASSWORDS / PINS
Never ever store your passwords or pin numbers in your online / offline email accounts !
Hope this helps in some way, happy mailing.
